Description: |
The description focuses on the shape of the fixed and movable jaws, the "salient" on the movable jaw, and the corresponding "recess" in the handle. The design may have been an attempt to "by-pass" the William Morehouse Feb. 27, 1866 self-adjusting wrench patent (no. 52,930). The image on the Patent Office web site is so poor that some features are not distinguishable.
Our thanks to collector Mike "Rat" Urness for a photo of a self-adjusting nut wrench which is marked in part "KINDERMANN ... PAT. JAN 25, 1870." A second style formerly owned by Frank Kingsbury sold in 2000.
Kindermann patented a more complicated self-adjusting wrench on March 16, 1886 (no. 338,078). KINDERMAN & SCHROEDER is listed as manufacturer of "clinch wrenches" and gasoline burners in 1880s Cleveland directories & lists of Ohio manufacturers. |
