Description:
The patent is for the "lips" or "flanges" which keep the open end from sliding down past a nut while it is run down a bolt. It is shown in the context of a carriage or wagon wrench.

An 1876 hardware catalog lists "COOPER"S COMMON SENSE WRENCH." One known example is marked with the patent date; the marking may not show depending on wear & quality of the original casting. This type of feature also appears in some "malleable implement wrenches" with part numbers.
