Description: |
The patent is for a knurled-nut adjustable open end wrench with the adjusting screw parallel to the movable jaw. The specifications differentiate the adjusting mechanism from those used in E. J. Worcester's June 9, 1857 patent (no. 17,531), and W.C. Noyes' May 31, 1864 patent (no. 42,961). The "S" handle shown in the drawings is the first appearance of the feature in U.S. wrench patents, but is not mentioned in the specifications.
Markings on known examples:
(1) "PAT APL 27 69" on the movable jaw, and "MECHANIC'S WRENCH PROVIDENCE R.I."
(2) MANF'D BY A.F. ALLEN PROV R.I. on the movable jaw and PAT APL 27 69 on the fixed jaw.
Another known example has no visible markings. |
