Nova Scotia (NS) patents were issued between 1834 and 1867, when they joined with Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick to form the Dominion of Canada.

The 1861 Census shows John E. Ritchie of Yarmouth, NS living in a household with 3 males and 7 females. He was not listed in the 1851 census; the 1871 Census shows him in Yarmouth, 50 years old, wife Harriet age 48, children Caroline (25), Maria (20), David (23), Robert (19(, Ella (17), Bessie (14). John and David were both tin plate workers.
