Description: |
| The patent is for the adjustable wrench head. The adjustment is paired thumb screws on opposite side of the head which clamp the internal jaws. It is shown applied to a tire bolt wrench driven by a crank and bevel gears, similar to the "Lang patent" (384,451).
A known example has no legible markings. By way of context, Worden Bros. (Alva Worden, John S. Worden, Jr. & Chauncey Worden) manufactured whip holders in the 1870s. That manufacture was disrupted by protracted patent infringement litigation with Anson Searls of Newark, NJ. In an 1886 Ypsilanti City Directory, Alva Worden appears as "inventor." John S. Lang's blacksmith shop was across the street from the Worden's homes. |
