Description:
The special features of this locking pliers are the movable face on the adjustable jaw, and the cross pin on the connecting link to hold the end in the handle.

The specifications note the movable gripping surface in the Seashore patent (no. 2,285,683). Patent nos. 949,557, 1,048,380, and 1,750,817 are also cited as references.

Known examples marked on the fixed jaw "PLI-RENCH / PAT. PEND." or "PLI-RENCH / PAT 2,489,057," with "WHALE TOOL CORP. / NEW YORK, N.Y. / MADE IN U.S.A." on the toggle link.

There are two variations for the structure of the sliding jaw insert. One variation has a pivot pin and a second pin that acts as a stop, as shown in the drawings for this patent. The more common variation has an elongated loop in the sliding jaw insert and a single pin which acts both to hold the insert and to limit its range of motion.
