Description:
The adjustable jaw passes through a slot in the shank, with the adjusting ring in a second slot at right angles. The patent describes tension springs to hold the jaw in the "open" position and retain the adjustment setting, but these springs are not found on known examples of the wrench.

Some examples have a compression coil spring and "slide" in the fixed jaw between the gripping surface and adjusting nut.
