Description:
The gripping force on the jaws is regulated by the adjustable spring tension. The lever handle and linkage provide for an "over center" effect so that once the jaws are clamped on to the work piece, the grip remains constant until released.

This patent is cited in later patents for self-adjusting locking pliers such as 6,591,719.
