Description:
The rotating head of the socket has specially machined teeth with double bevels, that engage with a reversible pawl. The pawl is held in engagement by a coil spring, and can be retracted and reversed by an internal rod extending to the end of the handle. A square socket and square cross section on the rod hold the pawl adjustment. The entire pawl mechanism is held in by two screws, and can be removed for repair or adjustment.

The intended function of the wrench was removal and replacement of axle nuts. Murch's parallel patent (no. 759,824) describes an adjustable jaw mechanism for this ratchet frame.
