Vintage Machinery entry for Samuel J. Shimer & Sons
Description:
This planer cutterhead design preceded the much more famous patent 877,407 of 1908, which is nowadays remembered as the first successful round cutterhead for planers and jointers. This 1899 patent was apparently acquired by Samuel J. Shimer & Sons, as evidenced by the patent date appearing on Shimer cutter-heads. The cutter-heads themselves do not seem to use this patent's wedge design. Rather, they use the design in the 1907 patent 874,871. Despite the fact that the Carsten patent was issued a few months later, the Carsten patent had priority over the 1907 Shimer patent because Carstens had first received a German patent.
