Vintage Machinery entry for DeLoach Mill Mfg. Co.
Description:
This friction feed works uses two pairs of rotating friction disks, each pair with the disk axles mounted at right angles to one another. In each pair, the larger disk's flat surface is contacted by the rim of the smaller disk. The smaller disk can be moved closer to the center of the larger disk to reduce speed, or closer to the rim to increase speed. This simple and effective mechanism also proved to be robust and reliable, and these feed works were a key part of the success of the DeLoach company. Two pairs of disk were used, in consecutive stages, because slippage increased unacceptably when the smaller disk was too close to the center of the other disk, and so a two-stage mechanism was need to provide a sufficient speed range.

See patent 434,770, issued on the same day, for some refinements to this design that make it even simpler and more reliable.
