Description:
Williams calls this his "universal smoothing plane" because it can be used for curved as well as straight surfaces. Nowadays we would call this a circular plane. It is constructed by a number of segments bound by a band and screw. Loosening the screw allows the segments to be moved so that their lower ends define the shape of the surface to be planed.
