Description:
The base and upper portion of the jaws are both adjustable by screws. The piece could be a stand-alone hand vise, or the jaws of a combination brace wrench. It is described as an improvement to the J. Goodrich May 18, 1880 patent (no. 227,686). The improvement is is supplemental cross-pieces or keyway-shaped tails of the movable jaws to counteract torsional strain.

Samuel B. McLane's parallel patent (no. 275,341) is another variation of the same idea.
