Description:

The inventor was deceased at the time the patent was issued; Frank McCoy was administrator.

The innovation is a gear tooth design that is intended to provide a smooth engagement while avoiding point loads on the tooth that can lead to breakage. The gear tooth has straight centers parallel with the axis of the gear, and straight ends oblique to that axis. The ends "transfer the strain to the center of the next tooth. The ends of the teeth, being straight, can be made of the same thickness as the centers, and the teeth thereby given equal strength throughout." McCoy patent gears, in sizes up to 30 inches, were featured in ads from Birmingham Iron Foundry, Derby, CT, well into the 20th century.
