Description:
The patent claims a number of elements of a combination plane, including, a moveable front skate, interchangeable cutters, and a cutter clamp. This is the first of Siegley's patents on a combination plane. Improvements were made in 245752, 269968, 294919, and 1032956.

Siegley labeled combination planes for sale by The Union Plane Co. of New Britian, CT circa 1903.

It is interesting that these planes were sometimes marked (as shown in patent picture 3) with a patent date of 2-10-81, which does not correspond to any Siegley patent date or application date, although it lies between the application date and grant date of 245752 and Siegley may have mistakingly believed that an office action letter from the patent examiner was the equivelent of saying the patent had granted (a common mistake amongst early patentees).

Jacob Seigley made planes in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania starting in about 1884. He signed a deal to produce transitional planes for Stanley Rule and Level in 1901. These transitional planes do not bear a model number. He sold his entire business to Stanley Rule and Level in 1905. Stanley continued to market planes with the Siegley name until about 1927 according to Plane Makers of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, by John F. Rumpf. These planes would include blades with a three letter marking:

SsS is Stanley steel Siegley. (a normal steel cutting iron for bench-planes)

STS is Stanley tapered Siegley. (a thick tapered iron for bench-planes)

SBS is Stanley block Siegley. (a blade for block plane)
