Description:
The two halves are loosely connected, with a "figure-8" opening for the rod handle. Pressure on the handle would spread the two halves and make them grip the inside of the metal barrel bung bushes.

David Ackerman's Aug. 5, 1879 bung-bush wrench patent (no. 218,106), has the same basic idea.
