| According to "Abridgements of Specifications Relating to the Steam Engine": "Piston for a blast furnace. The hollow cylinder forming the piston rises and falls, in the manner of the receiver of a gasometer, into a concentric space, formed by another or enclosing cylinder. The space is nearly filled with water, which makes an air tight joint, and relieves the piston from the friction of the common packing." |
