Vintage Machinery entry for T. R. Almond
Description:
The goal of this chuck design was to keep it simple, durable, and low cost. The spiral grooves vary their pitch in such a way that there is more leverage when holding large-diameter bits than when holding small-diameter bits. The design must have been effective as it was manufactured for nearly 30 years before being superseded by the Jacobs chuck of patent 709,014. Mr. Almond sold his business in 1904 and at that time it became the T. R. Almond Mfg. Co., which survived until after World War II.
