Description:
An example of this boring machine design has been seen on eBay. It carries this patent date but is otherwise unlabeled. That boring machine does not provide a separate seat, and the awkward horizontal handle shown in the patent drawing has been replaced by the more usual pair of vertically-revolving handles. These improvements were covered in patent 158,809.

An 1882 report of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Industrial Statistics lists "Phillips' Mfg. Company" of Allegheny, makers of "Boring Machines". With three employees, the firm made 2033 boring machines during the year prior.
